A San Luis Obispo Love Story

On December 19, 2021, Karen and Dan will stand before their family and friends to renew their vows and celebrate a new chapter in their lives.

Karen and Dan first met online in 2013. Dan was using an obscure screen name that Karen immediately recognized, and she reached out to him. They connected and began to chat and get to know each other. When they finally decided to meet in person, they hit it off, talking for more than four hours. It wasn’t long before they fell in love and moved in together.

Karen and Dan were married in 2017 after dating for more than three years and soon began to think about starting a family.

Karen’s medical issues first started when she was diagnosed with leukemia as a five-year-old and then again as a seven-year-old. Although she was ultimately cured, her past treatments prevented her from getting pregnant. It was when Karen and Dan were going through the IVF process to have a baby that she noticed a lump in her breast. While her doctor initially didn’t think much of it, a mammogram and ultrasound revealed the worst. She was diagnosed with cancer – again.

The next few months of treatment were incredibly difficult as Karen endured chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and a surgery to remove her ovaries, all while struggling with tremendous PTSD from her childhood cancer. The treatments worked and she was declared cancer free. Not long after, Karen and Dan welcomed a baby via a surrogate and egg donor. Life was good and they were relieved.

Shortly after the baby was born, however, Karen started experiencing some pain in her hip. She went to see her doctor and was devastated to learn that her cancer had metastasized to her bones. She’s back in treatment and actively fighting hard for her sweet little family. Karen and Dan are so excited to renew their vows and to kick off the New Year with some happy memories.

Karen and Dan’s story has touched us deeply and we are honored to help them fulfill their wish. We teamed up with Christina Tutt of Cask Events and are blown away by the incredible crew that she has assembled.
